In the first year of the 800cc format, Casey Stoner and his Ducati Desmosedici, were indeed a Red Storm.
Winning ten of eighteen races, the 22 year old Australian secured a first MotoGP Championship for himself and Ducati. In a season that saw few ‘elbow to elbow’, late race battles for victory, Catalunya was exceptional.
Here, the best straight up fight of the year between Casey and his main rival, Valentino Rossi, would see the two contest the race in spectacular fashion. Unlike many before him, Casey shrugged off Valentino’s famous late race pressure to win by 0.069 seconds. In Rossi’s words, “he rode like a God.”
